Trekking in Ladakh, Northern India
Ladakh, the trekking mecca of India, sits between the vast ranges of the Karakoram and Himalaya in the northern most reaches of India.  Ladakh is the highest, most remote and least populated region of India.  Once a part of western Tibet, Ladakh is heavily influenced by Tibetan culture.  The Ladakhi people are primarily Tibetan and Tibetan Buddhism is practiced here.  Mani walls and chortens greet trekkers at the entrance of villages while tattered prayer flags give way to the winds of high mountain passes.

Largely undiscovered by travelers from the U.S., the experience of trekking in Ladakh is reminiscent of Nepal in the early 70’s.  High mountain trails are the lifelines between villages that can be days apart.  Consumer goods often found in Nepalese villages are nonexistent in Ladakh.  Largely untouched by western culture, Ladakh is one of the last true frontiers of the Himalayan Range.

Trekking is a transformational experience.  Day by day, mile by mile, one begins to strip away the layers of modern life.  The only concern is what to carry for the day – water, clothing, camera, journal. As each day dawns we are drawn by the allure of high mountain passes and the tremendous views that surround us. Our worries become nonexistent. Our thoughts go within as we contemplate the question of ‘Who Am I’? Trekking in Ladakh is a pilgrimage as we are challenged physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Our bodies are renewed as we are free to be without schedules, worries or commitments. This openness to our experience is what makes trekking a truly transformational journey.
