Bhutan is nestled in the eastern Himalayas located north and east of India and south of Tibet. It is a country of rolling hills and is sometimes compared to Switzerland as it is similar in size and its lush, green landscape and snow peaks emerge from within the clouds. English is widely spoken and you will find that Bhutan is full of well-educated and vibrant people.
Many mystics, scholars, and pilgrims have journeyed to Bhutan over the centuries blessing the land and its people leaving a spiritual and cultural legacy that shapes the Bhutanese lifestyle. The country is rich in cultural heritage – traditional woven garments grace the proud Bhutanese people and brightly colored prayer flags flutter in the winds of the Himalayan Range.
The natural environment is valued highly by the Bhutanese as it represents the source of life. Bhutan is one of 10 bio-diversity hot spots in the world and it harbors some of the most exotic species of the eastern Himalayas with 770 species of birds and over 50 species of rhododendron. Rich wildlife is indigenous to the area with the like of the snow leopard, blue sheep, tiger, water buffalo, elephant, golden langur, and takin.
Due to this safeguard of the rich natural environment and culture, Bhutan has adopted a controlled tourism and development policy. In 2005, just 15,000 tourists were permitted to enter Bhutan and that number is not deemed to increase significantly.
